East Kimberley Regional Airport (EKRA) is estimated to cost $17.5 million. The Federal government has committed $13.5 million to the project and the State government has committed $2.5 million, with the remaining $1.5 million to be funded by the Shire from the Airport Reserve.

The length of the runway currently limits the airport to Code 3C aircraft. A key benefit of the proposed project, which involves lengthening the runway, is the capacity to accommodate Code 4C aircraft (i.e. the most commonly used and efficient aircraft, namely Boeing 737 and Airbus A320) to operate without restrictions. Aircraft leaving Kununurra will be able to operate at maximum take-off weight as soon as the upgrade is complete.
