Poolside Progress - November 2024

The Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley is pleased to provide an update on the Kununurra Leisure Centre Aquatic Redevelopment, which continues to develop as planned, despite limited visible activity on-site in recent weeks.

The demolition of the old pools and preparation of the site are critical steps in ensuring the long-term success of this redevelopment. The site is currently undergoing a necessary settling and compaction period to bring it to standard ground levels. This process ensures that the foundations for major earthworks and construction are stable and enduring, setting the stage for the next phases of the project.

As part of the redevelopment, the Shire anticipates work will commence on the highly anticipated Changing Places facility in early 2025. Changing Places facilities provide fully accessible bathrooms that include features such as adult-sized changing tables and ceiling hoists, designed to meet the needs of people with profound disabilities and their carers. This addition will make the Kununurra Leisure Centre (KLC) an inclusive and welcoming space for all members of the community, enhancing accessibility and equity for residents and visitors alike.

Major earthworks and other construction activities are also projected to begin in early 2025. The Shire appreciates the community's patience during this preparatory phase and remains committed to delivering a modern, high-quality aquatic facility that meets the region's needs.
