The natural foreshore and lake of Kununurra are among the most captivating features of the Kimberley region, attracting both locals and tourists. This picturesque lake not only serves as a significant recreational resource for the community but also holds immense cultural and environmental value. However, with projected population growth and mounting pressures of structural expansion on the foreshore, the need for a comprehensive plan to manage and preserve the Lake Kununurra Foreshore has become increasingly crucial. The Shire is actively exploring funding opportunities to support the development of the foreshore.

Since the contract was awarded to Hassell Studio, the Town Centre Revitalisation and Foreshore Development projects have progressed well, with the Hassell team visiting Kununurra and completing Stage 1 - Place Identity.

This important first step sets the foundation for a design that reflects the unique character and values of our community.

Over the past month, key progress milestones have included:

    • Finalisation of contract negotiations and engagement of sub-consultants
    • Development of a draft project programme
    • Commencement of Kununurra Place Identity research
    • Creation of initial base maps for both the Town Centre and Lake Foreshore project areas
    • Submission of the first monthly report

Meanwhile, the Shire has been actively negotiating the Grant Agreement for the Kununurra Foreshore Development project, which is expected to be signed this month.

Work is now focused on finalising the Stakeholder Engagement Plan, which will guide meaningful consultation with the community and key stakeholders as the project moves into its next phase.

📢 Lake Kununurra Foreshore Plan Adopted 🌿

We are thrilled to announce that the Lake Kununurra Foreshore Plan was adopted at the July Ordinary Council Meeting. This plan has been shaped by extensive community engagement that began in December 2021. With 350 responses to our initial survey, the community's passion for the foreshore's future was clear.

Workshops and individual stakeholder meetings further refined the plan, ensuring it aligns with community values and sustainable development goals. The draft plan was open for public feedback from March to July 2024, receiving overwhelming support.

Key recommendations focus on ecological preservation, cultural heritage, and future development. Implementation will require grants, budget allocation, and partnerships, guided by an internal project management working group and ongoing community involvement.

Stay tuned for updates as we work together to bring this vision to life! 🌊
