The Disaster Ready Fund (DRF) is the Australian Government’s flagship initiative for disaster resilience and risk reduction.

The Australian Government is providing up to one billion dollars through the DRF. The funding runs over five years from 1 July 2023.

The funding supports projects. These projects address the physical and social impacts of disasters on our communities - disasters that can be caused by climate change and other natural hazards.

On behalf of the Commonwealth, the fund is administered by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA); within WA DFES are responsible for its implementation on behalf of NEMA.

The Shire was advised on 22 August 2024 that it was successful with its application for the Kununurra Regional Multi-Purpose Emergency Evacuation Centre Stage 1 under the Disaster Ready Fund Round 2 2024/25. The amount allocated to the Shire is $14,127,498 plus a 10% contribution from the Shire.

The Shire recently received notification from DFES that the Financial Agreement will be issued around March 2025 at which point the Shire must submit a Project Implementation Plan. No works on the project can commence until then.

Preparations are underway to advance the next stage of Kununurra Regional Multi-Purpose Emergency Evacuation Centre Stage 1, with Shire officers currently finalising a Request for Tender (RFT) for design works.

The RFT is scheduled for release to the market in early May.

The first stage of this project will focus on a detailed assessment of the existing building, examining its structural integrity as well as the capacity, condition, and potential for expansion of its services and infrastructure.

This foundational work will guide future design and ensure the facility meets the region's long-term emergency management needs.
