The Local Planning Strategy (LPS) serves as the principal framework for guiding land use and development in the Shire. It provides a strategic direction for growth and development, ensuring that decisions align with the long-term vision for the community, the environment, and the economy. The LPS integrates key objectives, including managing land use, zoning, and identifying future growth areas, all while balancing the needs of residents, businesses, and the natural environment.

Currently, the Shire is working to amend the LPS to ensure it aligns with emerging planning needs, local values, and state planning reforms. The amendment process will update and refine the Strategy to reflect current conditions, identify new opportunities for development, and address community priorities.

The updated and drafted LPS will be presented to the Council Briefing in February 2025 for review and discussion. Following this, the document will be taken to the community for review and consultation to gather valuable feedback from residents, stakeholders, and other key groups. This consultation will help refine the document further, ensuring it reflects a broad range of perspectives before final adoption.

By amending the LPS, the Shire aims to create a clear, practical, and forward-thinking framework for land use and development that meets the community’s evolving needs while fostering a sustainable future.

OBJECTIVE

From a planning perspective, what would make the Shire more:

  1. Liveable;
  2. Connected; and
  3. Sustainable

WHAT WE WILL DELIVER

To review the Strategy, the Shire must first prepare a report of review of Local Planning Scheme No. 9 (LPS 9). As community values change over time, it is important to re-test ideas, identify gaps or new emerging ideas and so the Shire invites preliminary feedback from the community and other stakeholders as part of the report of review. The Shire welcomes all feedback and in particular in consideration of the following:

WHAT DO WE NEED

The Shire is reviewing the Local Planning Strategy to inform the long-term strategic land use and decision-making processes. The Local Planning Strategy will provide a rationale for zoning approvals, development areas for future growth and classifications of the land under the Shire’s Local Planning Scheme. The Shire invites you to be involved in developing a Strategy that celebrates the characteristics, culture and sense of place, that you love now and meets your future needs.
