As at April 2025, the Shire is working alongside consultants engaged by the Commonwealth government to support the development of a Preliminary Business Case (PBC) for the proposed Ord River Irrigation Area (ORIA) expansion into the Northern Territory.
The purpose of the PBC is to provide both the Northern Territory and Commonwealth governments with a comprehensive assessment of viable options for extending the irrigation scheme beyond Western Australia's border.
Strategically aligned with the priorities of the Australian, Northern Territory, and Western Australian governments, the proposed expansion represents a major opportunity for the regional and economic development of Northern Australia.
It also supports broader national objectives around resilience, water security, and agricultural productivity.
