Why does the road need to be upgraded?

These upgrades are being undertaken to address the following:

SAFETY – to improve road safety for the users by improving the road condition and addressing the steep incline on the section that connects Meat Works Road to Barytes Road.

SECURITY – to provide additional port security by constructing the new road slightly further away from the port premises.

ACCESS – to improve the access to the port and the surrounding areas.

What works are included in the project?

The works will include the reconstruction of MacPhee Street and Harbour Road (Great Northern Highway) to the port entry, and the realignment of Meat Works Road to tie-in with Barytes Road. This includes upgrades of existing roads and intersections and construction of a new road running parallel to Meat Works Road as well as additional drainage.

    Will trees be removed?

Some scrub and small vegetation will need to be cleared along Meat Works Road and Barytes Road.

What other Environmental Impact will there be as a result of this Project?

A desktop environmental study was undertaken by Talis Consultants for five concept designs for the realignment of Barytes Road. As per the study, no major environmental impacts were identified. A site investigation is currently being undertaken for the Preferred Road Alignment Route.

How will these upgrades affect me?

Residents and businesses along O’Donnell Street, Macphee St, Harbour Road (Great Northern Hwy) Meat Works Road (Wyndham Port Heritage Trail), Gully Road and Barytes Road will be impacted when the construction of the upgrades start. However, traffic management will be in place to allow residents, business owners and patrons easy access to their properties. The Shire will advise residents and businesses of periods of disruption well in advance.

When will the Design be final?

It is anticipated that the design will be further progressed once community consultation has been undertaken (9 Sep 2024 – 4 Oct 2024), with the final design completion scheduled for Dec 2024.

    When will the construction start?

At this stage it is anticipated that construction will start mid-2025.

Will I be notified about any disruptions?

Yes, the Shire will provide advance notice to residents and businesses that may be impacted by any roadworks disruptions.

How is this project being funded

This project is being funded by the State Government.
