The Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley is pleased to provide an update on the Kununurra Leisure Centre Aquatic Redevelopment, which continues to develop as planned, despite limited visible activity on-site in recent weeks.

The demolition of the old pools and preparation of the site are critical steps in ensuring the long-term success of this redevelopment. The site is currently undergoing a necessary settling and compaction period to bring it to standard ground levels. This process ensures that the foundations for major earthworks and construction are stable and enduring, setting the stage for the next phases of the project.

As part of the redevelopment, the Shire anticipates work will commence on the highly anticipated Changing Places facility in early 2025. Changing Places facilities provide fully accessible bathrooms that include features such as adult-sized changing tables and ceiling hoists, designed to meet the needs of people with profound disabilities and their carers. This addition will make the Kununurra Leisure Centre (KLC) an inclusive and welcoming space for all members of the community, enhancing accessibility and equity for residents and visitors alike.

Major earthworks and other construction activities are also projected to begin in early 2025. The Shire appreciates the community's patience during this preparatory phase and remains committed to delivering a modern, high-quality aquatic facility that meets the region's needs.

    Welcome to Poolside Progress -
Updates about the new KLC Swimming pool provided by Mikel, our Projects Manager:

We’ve completed the demolition stage and initial earthworks for the swimming pool project and are now finalising key planning details. This phase includes finalising design elements, ensuring compliance with regulations, and addressing logistical requirements. While progress may not be immediately visible on-site, there's a lot of essential engineering and management work happening behind the scenes to keep the project moving forward.

    Regards,

    Mikel

    Project Overview:
We are embarking on a thrilling journey to build a state-of-the-art 50-meter swimming pool, a leisure pool, and some fantastic BBQ areas for the community to enjoy. Our main focus is currently on the Demolition and Construction phases.

    What's Happening Now:
The site is now securely fenced off to keep everyone safe and ensure that only authorised personnel are on site. If you have been around lately, you might have noticed that the demolition phase is in full swing. We have got heavy machinery working hard to break down the old 25-meter pool infrastructure. The debris is being carted away to the landfill, which has increased local traffic.

Here’s the scoop on the logistics:
Work Hours: The machinery is in action from 7am to 4pm on weekdays and occasionally on Saturdays from 7am to 12:30pm. On rare occasions, operations might extend to Sundays starting from 8am. Trucks are traveling from the site to the landfill outside of school hours.

Traffic Management: We have a traffic management plan in place to ensure everyone’s safety. Ron Hodnett Drive is closed to vehicles to prevent any incidents. We are aware of the vandalism issue with the “Road closed” signage and are working on a more permanent solution.

See the truck itinerary for the demolition period, which is expected to wrap up by the end of this month.

    Sneak Peek:
Check out the photos below for a glimpse of the current site. For those who used the old pool, the transformation is already underway, and we are just getting started on what promises to be an incredible project!

Stay tuned, as there is so much more to come on this exciting journey. We anticipate this project will take us through to early 2026, and we can't wait to share each milestone with you!
